Joe Levin

I am a writer in the 2020s, which means that I’m also an editor, producer, author, and media strategist. If it involves storytelling, then I will do it. I have done work for clients such as ESPN, Texas Monthly, Nike, Wildsam, and many more.

I was a story producer (essentially, the writer) of In the Arena: Serena Williams, an 8-part documentary detailing the life of Serena Williams airing July 2024 on ESPN. The film, which was a selection of the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, involved over 24+ hours of interviews with Williams and over 100,000 pieces of archival footage. I helped craft the story from the inception of the development process to the final delivery, playing a lead role across creative decisions. I was nominated for a 2025 Sports Emmy for “Best Documentary Series” in recognition of my work.

I’m also the co-author of the 2023 bestselling book Religion of Sports: Navigating the Trials of Life Through the Games We Love along with Gotham Chopra, an Amazon Editor’s Choice. The book, which received a starred review in Booklist, is available now wherever books are sold.

I am also a senior editor at the Sunday Long Read newsletter, and frequently write about sports, BBQ, and music in various outlets. I graduated from the University of Texas with degrees in journalism and Plan II. At UT, I was a 40 Acres Scholar. I live in Austin, TX.
